Welfare chauvinism, as a specific tenet of right-wing populist ideology in Europe (though it has permeated the vocabulary of mainstream parties as well), has gained saliency in the context of 2008 global financial crisis, and became exacerbated by the 2015 “refugee (reception) crisis” (Keskinen 2016; Loch and Norocel 2015; Norocel 2016).
